Chickens are a great resource for the homesteader and farmer. Not only are eggs a wonderful and delicious source of nutrition, but hens are also an invaluable addition to any garden through fertilization and pest control. And if you have the space, you may choose to raise broilers and rest easier knowing exactly where your meat is coming from. Either way, knowing how to humanely dispatch a bird is the greatest dignity you can give the animal before it is harvested for food. And intimately knowing the sacrifice required to put food on your plate is key to becoming an ethical eater.
In this class, you will learn the essentials for humane slaughter. Learn how to pluck, clean and eviscerate the bird so that it is ready to go in the pot. You’ll have the opportunity to practice with at least three birds, so that you’ll be confident when the time comes for you to handle the process on your own.
