Join us for a morning of intensive Indigo dyeing where you will learn how to make an indigo vat using pre-reduced indigo (no lye here!) You will also learn how to keep your vat happy to keep dyeing all summer long. We will be dyeing cotton bandanas and tea towels, but feel free to bring up to 3 small items to dye.
• Learn to create and maintain an indigo vat. The vats will be made in 5 gallon buckets, so everyone will be able to cap their bucket and leave with a vat to continue playing at home!
• Learn the fundamentals of the shibori pattern making process focusing on folded, tied and clamped resist. If you've attended any of the other natural dye classes, you have some experience with the folds and such (and if not, that's what we're here for!). We will have some scrap fabric for practicing your shibori skills.
• Dye natural fiber material in a plant-derived indigo vat; 3 cotton bandanas or tea towels will be provided for dyeing
• Feel free to bring your own fabric to dye, but please limit to 1-3 items (the size of a t-shirt, pillowcase, etc.), and please no bulky pieces (towels, linens, bedding etc.), as vat space and time are limited. Cellulose fibers (cotton, linen, rayon, ramie) accept the color the best.
This is a messy, rain-or-shine, outdoor class that will be held in a private home in intern Atlanta. Bring a water bottle. Snacks, coffee, and tea will be provided.
